Australia is expected to introduce a ban on plain - and flavoured e-cigarettes

2023-05-02

The Australian government is expected to announce a crackdown on illegal e-cigarettes as early as next week, it was reported today, amid growing concern about the growing use of e-cigarettes by teenagers.

The health minister, Mark Butler, will announce long-discussed changes to the regulation of e-cigarettes, including the introduction of plain packaging and a ban on certain flavours, before the federal budget on 9 May, according to media reports.

News.com.au first reported on Friday that Butler had promised substantial action, saying the government planned to push ahead with non-pharmaceutical e-cigarettes and said it would focus on importing them from overseas.

He told the publication that there are enforcement problems - because e-cigarettes are imported in small boxes, which makes them difficult to intercept at the border, and states and territories are reluctant to divert resources to black market policing.

"So we have to do something at the border," Mr. Butler said. "States have to do something around policing and retail arrangements. I think there is a will to do that."

Butler's office declined to comment on the news.com.au report. However, Guardian Australia has learned that the minister will address the National Press Club on 2 May, a week before the federal budget, to discuss a crackdown on e-cigarettes.
