E-cigarette flavor ban fails to reduce teen vaping, study says

On August 26, according to foreign reports, a journal article published last week in Nicotine & Tobacco Research found that California’s restrictions on flavored tobacco sales did not affect youth e-cigarette use. These findings stand out because proponents of these restrictions claim flavored vaping products are the cause of youth vaping and must therefore be banned to reduce teen use.

Researchers analyzed data from the California Healthy Kids Survey to understand e-cigarette use among high school students in the California Bay Area. They compared changes in e-cigarette use between students who attended schools in cities that banned flavored e-cigarettes from 2018 to 2019 and those who went to school in cities that did not ban flavored e-cigarettes.

Key takeaway: The researchers concluded that flavored e-cigarette bans did not significantly alter students' odds of current and former e-cigarette use. California's local flavor ban is unrelated to changes in vaping use, meaning these policies aimed at reducing teen vaping have failed completely.

The ban on flavored e-cigarettes has proven to have a huge negative impact on public health, national finances, and national security.

According to a study by Yale University researcher Dr. Abigail Friedman, flavor bans in San Francisco have more than doubled the chances of teens smoking. Because flavors are essential for adults trying to quit smoking, flavor bans prevent adults from making life-saving transitions. State finances are also affected by flavor bans, such as in Massachusetts, where bans on flavored e-cigarettes and tobacco products cost the state about $10 million a month.

E-cigarettes have the potential to save 6.6 million American lives. The flavor ban prevented these lives from being saved, and was shown to have no effect on teenage use. For lawmakers, banning flavors with new, reduced-risk nicotine products is simply the wrong thing to do.
