E-cigarette Risk for Stroke? A study at a university in Europe and the United States proved a fallacious theory that could reduce the risk of stroke in smokers

2023-05-05

A recent study by several universities in Italy, Greece and the United States reconfirmed that e-cigarettes do less damage to cells, barely affecting cell repair and mobility, and can prevent cardiovascular diseases. A study by the University of Michigan and Georgetown University in the US also found that e-cigarette use did not increase the risk of cardiovascular disease or stroke.

Smoking is harmful to health and is one of the risk factors for many diseases, including common lung disease, oral health, and even cardiovascular disease, stroke and other problems. According to the World Health Organization's 2021 report on the Global Tobacco epidemic, more than 80,000 people die every year from burning tobacco products, so smokers should take care of their health.

If the risks are so dire, how can smokers tackle nicotine addiction? A recent study in the journal Wiley Analytical Science found that vaping product aerosols cause less cellular damage than cigarette smoke. Generally speaking, arteriosclerosis is mainly due to the failure of vascular repair mechanism. The healing ability and good migration ability of endothelial cells are the guarantee of successful vascular repair. Therefore, healthy endothelial cells can effectively prevent arteriosclerosis and further reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

Researchers from the University of Catania in Italy, the University of Patras in Greece and the University of Pennsylvania in the United States found through experiments that even if the concentration of e-cigarette sol was increased to 80%~100%, the effect on endothelial cells was very little, and the concentration of cigarette smoke even if diluted to 12.5%, it would greatly reduce the ability of wound healing and migration of endothelial cells. Again, e-cigarettes are much less harmful than cigarettes, so they are the best option for smokers who can't get rid of nicotine and want to avoid cardiovascular disease or stroke.

Similarly, recent studies from the University of Michigan and Georgetown University looked at the effects of e-cigarettes and cigarettes on cardiovascular disease in adults. Related articles Longitudinal Associations Between Exclusive and Dual Use of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems and Cigarettes and cigarettes Self-Reported Incident Diagnosed Cardiovascular Disease Among Adults was published in the Oxford College Journal of Nicotine and Tobacco Research. Using waves 1-5 of the Tobacco and Health Study Population Assessment (2013-2019), the researchers analyzed 280 myocardial infarction events and 186 stroke events and deconstructed them using a mathematical model. They found that cigarette users alone had increased reports of myocardial infarction and stroke over a five-year period, and e-cigarette users only or never smoked, It has nothing to do with this mathematical statistic.

Taken together, both studies have confirmed the harm reduction effect of e-cigarettes to a certain extent, and the use of e-cigarettes is an effective way to prevent or reduce cardiovascular disease and stroke among smokers.
