Macau strengthens tobacco control: nearly 150,000 inspections in the first half of the year

Macau continues to step up its efforts in tobacco control. Law enforcement data released by the Health Bureau of the SAR government on the 16th showed that in the first half of the year, tobacco control law enforcement officers inspected 149,748 places, an increase of 2.3% over the same period last year.


Among them, the number of daytime inspections was 115,707, and the number of nighttime inspections was 34,041. Among the places inspected at night, shops and shopping malls are still the main objects of inspection and law enforcement, accounting for 47%; followed by inspection and law enforcement of restaurants, accounting for 27.4%; other places including game console centers, Internet cafes, saunas and bars account for 47%. 25.6%.


Statistics show that in the first half of this year, Macao’s tobacco control law enforcement recorded a total of 933 prosecutions, including 918 cases of illegal smoking, 7 cases of selling tobacco products that did not meet the label requirements, 6 cases of selling tobacco products on the shelf and 2 cases of illegal sales e-cigarette. The types of illegal places with the most prosecution cases were restaurants, parks/gardens and leisure areas, and other indoor places for collective use.


According to the laws of Macau, smoking is prohibited within 10 meters of all public indoor places and bus stops in Macau, except for the licensed smoking rooms in airports and casinos. The Health Bureau stated that in order to protect the rights and interests of non-smokers, tobacco control law enforcement officers will strictly enforce the law, and any reports will be followed up confidentially.
