New York health officials warn parents, educators of teen vaping dangers

2022-09-09

News on September 9, according to foreign reports, in 2021, nearly 85% of middle and high school students in the United States will use electronic cigarettes or electronic cigarettes.

The CDC said more than 71 percent of people reported using fruit-flavored e-cigarettes, making them the most popular among several other flavors in this age group.

Candy desserts or sweet scents are the second most popular of these products and may be what attracts teens to them.

It's important to have a support system for young people who use vaping devices, said Andrew Hyland, chair of the health behaviors department at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in New York City.

Products available for sale have new chemical compositions and higher proportions of nicotine comparable to cigarettes.

Hyland said it is not safe to use any type of nicotine on children, teens and young adults.

The small size of e-cigarettes and even fruit flavors that appeal to teens, such as Skittles, Energy and Peach, are reasons why these devices are so popular among teens and young adults, he said.

That's why parents and educators should be educated about what these devices look like so they know what to look out for, as teens who may be young may start bringing them back to the classroom.

“There are people who vape in places where they may not be able to. With young people who can go to school. They are easy to hide, they have an appealing flavor, and a lot of the packaging is super cool,” says Hyland.
