New York lawmakers propose vaping control classes for teens

2022-08-02

Under new legislation proposed by the New York State Assembly, children who vape in school may need to enroll in a state-developed smoking cessation program.

Assemblyman Keith Brown introduced A.10547 to amend state public health laws to require those who use e-cigarettes or vaping products in schools to participate in an e-cigarette or vaping product prevention, control, or awareness program, according to news reports.

Participating in the program will be part of a larger effort by the state to create an educational program used in schools across the state to discourage e-cigarette use.

Children under the age of 21 who are caught using or possessing e-cigarettes or vaping products will also notify their parents or guardians, according to the text of the bill.

"E-cigarettes are a relatively new product that manufacturers have previously marketed to non-smoking youth with a variety of sweetened e-liquids and advertising campaigns," Brown wrote in his rationale for the legislation. . "Furthermore, certain e-cigarettes aimed at youth are designed to be small and stylish and can be refilled with user-friendly pre-filled liquid pods, making the device easy to hide from authority figures."
