Scientists in Mexico say they have developed a new test for e-cigarette aerosol

2022-10-26

A Mexican government health regulator said its scientists have developed a new method to analyze aerosols in electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), saying no one else has come up with the method yet.

In June, Mexico banned the sale of vaping products.

The final results of the new analysis of the ENDS product using the new method will be published in scientific journals in the coming months, according to Alejandro Svarch, head of Cofepris, adding that the pioneering method developed in Mexico will be of interest to health authorities in other countries.

Other countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, have tested e-cigarette products for aerosols since at least 2014. Svarch did not explain how Mexico's new testing method was performed, or why it worked, or why other methods did not, making no mention of which products were tested or at what temperatures.

Analysis by health regulator Cofepris using exclusive methods detected 30 undisclosed substances in inhaled aerosols through ENDS products, he said.

Linalool, which can be used as an insecticide, was one of the substances detected, Svarch said at a news conference last week with Mexican President Lopez Obrador.

"This in itself is a huge deception to consumers who believe that this product is less harmful than traditional cigarettes because it is said to only have flavoring agents and nicotine when in fact it contains other kinds of substances or ingredients that are dangerous to humans." 'said Swaatch.

Hidden ingredients that e-cigarette device makers don't want us to know about include dimethyl ether, benzyl alcohol, ethyl propionate, isoamyl acetate, butyl acetate and methyl cinnamate, he said.

Svarch also showed a song commissioned by Cofepris warning of the risks of vaping and advising ENDS users to give up now.

According to media reports, the cautionary tales offered in the song's lyrics include a woman who lost three teeth to vaping and a handsome man who became known as burning Face because his beloved e-cigarette "exploded while using it.
