September 2 news, according to foreign reports, a recent study from the Yale School of Public Health shows that higher taxes on e-cigarettes may prompt young e-cigarette users to switch to traditional cigarettes.

Connecticut has a $4.35 tax on a pack of cigarettes — the highest in the nation — and a 10 percent wholesale tax on open-ended e-cigarettes.

George State University health economist Michael Pesco and Yale University's Abigail Friedman co-authored the study.

He said: "We want to lower taxes on e-cigarettes to incentivise people to use a more deadly product - cigarettes - and thus reduce their risk.

But mental health experts warn it's important to understand and address the factors that lead young people to vape.

"The emotional distress young people are going through right now is appalling," said Dr. Javeed Sukhera, chair of the department of psychiatry at Hartford Hospital. "The reality they're going through, the reality this country is going through, the sociopolitical reality, is really tough for young people.
