Tempe, Arizona considers ban on flavored e-cigarettes

2022-08-29

On August 29, according to foreign reports, if a new ordinance in Tempe, Arizona, is approved, it will ban companies from selling flavored e-cigarette products within the city limits.

According to ABC15 News, proponents of the move told the media they wanted to reduce the number of young people vaping or smoking.

However, local businesses said they would not sell to any minors.

"We don't sell to kids, we don't sell to anyone without ID," said Ted Kaercher, owner of HQ Smoke and Vape in Tempe.

Kaercher said he has been in business for about 30 years and opposes bans on flavored products.

"It's legal for them to own and consume here in Tempe, and it just forces me not to carry these products," he said.

According to Kaercher, the ban will force adults to drive to other parts of the valley to buy flavored products.

Tempe-based e-cigarette dealer Rex Williamson agreed.

"All the vape shops punch people, that's our livelihood," he said. "It doesn't affect anyone's bottom line, and no one wants to risk their business by trying to sell to minors."

In Tempe, part of developing the new ordinance included engaging with the public. The proposal would ban the sale or proposed sale of any flavored tobacco product that provides vaping or vaporized nicotine through the use of e-cigarettes, according to city documents.

The city said it was scheduling dates to discuss a possible ban, but those dates have not yet been finalized.
