Thailand to End Cigarettes Smoking groups are urging Thailand to lift its ban on e-cigarettes

2023-04-25

April 25 -- Citing the UK's progressive approach to e-cigarettes, the End Smoking Thailand (ECST) is urging Thailand to legalize e-cigarettes, according to Thai media outlet Thaiger.

The sale and use of e-cigarettes is illegal in Thailand, creating an unregulated black market and increasing access for minors, according to the ECST.

"E-cigarettes are legal in England, allowing the government to take steps and effectively enforce regulations to protect minors." ECST and the Facebook page "What Is an E-Cigarette? "Said Asa Saligupta, a representative of the council. "The UK government will allocate 45 million pounds [$56.05 million] to reduce smoking rates in the country and another 3 million pounds to clamp down on shops selling e-cigarettes to under-18s."

"Thailand's ban claims to protect minors, but the sale and use of e-cigarettes is open and commonplace. Children can easily obtain e-cigarettes through online channels without any regulations or checks." "Saligupta said.

Maris Karanyawat says following the example of the UK could be the solution to Thailand's vaping policy problems. "The sub-committee studying factors affecting the health system and overseeing the enforcement of the Public Health Law has issued a report based on a comprehensive study and opinion of all groups involved in the issue of e-cigarettes. The report recommends that the ban on e-cigarettes should be lifted in Thailand so that they can be properly controlled through the Tobacco Product Control Law 2017."

In preparation for the upcoming 10th session of the Conference of Parties to the WHO Framework on Tobacco Control, to be held in Panama in November, Karanyawat said, "We hope that the Thai representative will consider the report of the Committee on Public Health and recommend ways to reduce tobacco harm based on new scientific evidence, This evidence suggests that e-cigarettes should be controlled differently from combustible cigarettes because they have different harmful effects."
