Vaping prevalence in North Dakota: More adults vaping than smoking

2022-09-14

On September 14, according to foreign reports, the US state of North Dakota will receive $6 million after an investigation showed that the e-cigarette company JUUL misled customers about its nicotine content and marketing to children.

So, how popular are vaping in North Dakota, and are they really helping people quit smoking, as the vaping industry claims?

According to the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services, it depends on the user's definition of opt-out.

"They say a lot of people are just diverting products, which have nicotine in them and are addictive."

More adults in the state now vape than smoke, according to the data.

“These are people who may have never considered smoking, they are vaping now, and are addicted to nicotine, because many vaping products starting with JUUL can change the chemistry of the product to make it more addictive, so we see people have Severe nicotine addiction," said Neil Charvat, director of the Tobacco Prevention and Control Program.

Whether you use cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars or chew, it's still nicotine, Charvat said.

The addiction is there and it will never go away unless you treat it.

"We're seeing more and more adults and young people who want to quit vaping, only to find that you just keep getting addicted to nicotine. It's not easy to quit smoking, it's still the same addiction," Chavat said.

Charvat says don't give up, as it may take multiple attempts to quit.
