Young Danes smoke less: More snus nicotine packs and e-cigarettes

2023-04-14

April 14 - It has been reported that there has been a drop in cigarette consumption among young Danes, but there has been an increase in the use of nicotine products.

Snuff, nicotine packs and vape devices are increasingly popular with young Danes, with 35.1 percent of 15 to 29-year-olds using these products on a daily or regular basis, up from 26.3 percent in 2020.

According to a study conducted by the Danish National Institute of Public Health and the University of Southern Denmark on behalf of the Danish Health Authority, cigarette use decreased from 20.1 percent to 19 percent, while the use of smokeless nicotine products increased from 9.1 percent to 12.9 percent.

"We also found that new products in particular, such as e-cigarette devices and smokeless nicotine products, seem to be particularly popular among the very young." Nanna Jarlstrup, one of the report's researchers. "This is naturally worrying."

"Unfortunately, we have also seen an increase in the use of some illegal products. For example, the new single-use Puff Bars e-cigarette." Jarlstrup said.

"It's not legal to sell them in Denmark, but we can see that young people can use them because they use them." 'she said.

While the number of 18 - to 24-year-olds who smoke daily or occasionally has fallen compared with 2020, the number of 15 - to 17-year-olds who smoke has increased.

Denmark has banned smoking in schools and during continuing education hours, removed cigarettes from store displays and raised the price of a pack of cigarettes to help reduce smoking.
