FDA chief says independent review of food and tobacco

2022-07-20

The FDA commissioner said Tuesday he has commissioned an independent review of the agency's food and tobacco program, following months of criticism over the agency's handling of infant formula shortages and vaping reviews, The Associated Press reported.

The announcement comes as FDA Commissioner Robert Califf seeks to shake off several controversies that have dominated his second run of the agency, including his marketing rejection to e-cigarette maker Juul Labs order (MDO), which later had to be revoked.

In a statement, Calif said fundamental questions about structure, functions, funding and leadership need to be addressed in the agency's plans.

The agency's Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) is facing the challenge of addressing policy and enforcement issues stemming from a growing number of novel products that could have a significant impact on public health.

Califf said the nonprofit Reagan-Udall Foundation — a nongovernmental research group created by Congress to support the FDA's work — will convene experts to conduct assessments within 60 business days of the food and tobacco business.
