Leading Australian GP reiterates that e-cigarettes are effective for smoking cessation

2023-08-11

Leading Australian general practitioner and anti-smoking researcher has again stressed that switching from smoking to vaping is the most effective way to quit smoking given the relative safety of vaping.

Dr Colin Mendelsohn has even written a book on the topic, Stop Smoking: The Health Truth About Vaping, and he is also discussing the issue at the Cancer Council of Australia. "The Royal College of Physicians concluded in its 2021 report that 'vaping is an effective treatment for tobacco dependence and that all treatment pathways should include and encourage its use'. This is something all Cancer Council Australia should consider The problem."

"Over the past 15 years, 100 million people worldwide have died from smoking, yet vaping is ubiquitous. "Switching from smoking to vaping can dramatically reduce the risk of cancer. It is estimated that the cancer risk of vaping nicotine is more than 200 times lower than that of smoking. ’ added Mendelsohn.

Alessia Brooks from Cancer Council NSW recently said the council does not recommend vaping as a way to quit smoking because the evidence on this is inconclusive. In this regard, Mendelsohn said that is not the case. "But that's not true," Mendelsohn said. "There is growing evidence that e-cigarettes can help many smokers quit. A Cochrane review, the highest standard of internationally recognized evidence-based research in healthcare, published in September 2021, shows e-cigarettes are more effective as a smoking cessation therapy than nicotine replacement therapy." 53% stronger."

He added that cancer groups in Australia needed to reassess their positions, as health groups in the UK and New Zealand had done. "So I think it's time for Cancer Council Australia to reassess their thinking, as Cancer Research UK and Cancer Society New Zealand have done."
