Canadian patent for biodegradable filter tow technology

2022-07-19

Reenbutts' biodegradable filter tow technology has been granted a Canadian patent.

The patent adds to Greenbutts' proprietary technology stack to provide an all-natural, biodegradable and water-dispersible cigarette filter. Previously, Greenbutts was granted patent recognition in the UK and US.

"Greenbutts' mission began 12 years ago, when the term single-use product was not used as often as it is today," Greenbutts CEO Tadas Lisauskas said in a statement. "As governments, industry and consumers all align with a green, clean future, our extensive R&D investment with a world-class scientific team is now globally recognised."

According to Lisaukas, Greenbutts' biodegradable cigarette filters are not only compatible with traditional combustible smoking products, but also with heat-not-burn products. In August 2021, Greenbutts signed an agreement to supply its biodegradable filters to Poda Lifestyle and Wellness.

"This patent is strategic for our organization because it is fully in line with the Canadian government's decision to ban the manufacture and import of hazardous single-use plastics, a historic move in North America," he said. "Our technology is a viable and sustainable alternative to cellulose acetate filters, while maintaining the sensory experience, providing the high-performance filtration capabilities of traditional filters."

"The grant of this new intellectual property by the Canadian Intellectual Property Office is yet another example of the company's emergence as the most strategic partner in driving the tobacco industry's transformation from single-use plastic to planet-friendly once and for all," said Luis Sanches, chief strategy officer at Greenbutts. .
