Scots teen vaping surge sparks renewed call for ban on single-use products

2023-03-04

Troubling new figures show a huge increase in vaping among teenagers in Scotland - prompting more calls for a ban on single-use e-cigarettes, according to reports.

One in 10 students in S4 say they regularly vape, a threefold increase in the past five years, new Scottish government figures show.

Smoking rates among 13-year-olds also more than doubled in S2, with 4.3% of this age group regularly vaping.

Shockingly, Record has launched a campaign to outlaw environmentally damaging single-use vaping, a brand that has exploded in popularity over the past few years.

There are concerns that the brightly colored, candy-loving gadgets are targeting children and teens.

The Scottish government has announced an urgent review to consider measures including a potential ban, after Record launched a campaign highlighting the environmental and waste threats posed by single-use e-cigarettes.

Anti-smoking charity ASH Scotland said children using vaping products also posed a major public health problem.

Chief executive Sheila Duffy said: "Most vaping products contain highly addictive nicotine, as well as toxic e-liquids that have not been tested for inhalation safety and, over time, can damage developing lungs .

"Young people who experiment with vaping are three times more likely to start smoking than non-vapers, a prospect we should all want our children to avoid. Promoting novel products such as recreational vaping is the tobacco industry's exposure to future generations. A way for potential consumers - this is an issue that the Scottish Government needs to address urgently."

Scottish Greens health spokesman Gillian Mackay said: "It is certainly no coincidence that these staggering figures have coincided with a surge in the popularity of such environmentally damaging brands.

"This strengthens our resolve and the need to forcefully push for a ban on single-use items on the grounds of public health and pollution. If we do nothing, we will face a health and environmental disaster, so we must act now. "

In 2018, data from the Scottish School Youth Lifestyle and Substance Use Survey showed that 2% of 13-year-olds and 3% of 15-year-olds vaped regularly.

The Scottish Government's 2021-22 Health and Wellbeing Survey, released earlier this week, found that 10.1% of Form 4 pupils and 4.3% of Form 2 pupils now report regular use of e-cigarettes - meaning at least once a week.
