Is vaping more harmful than smoking?

2025-06-27

Vapes may be less harmful than traditional cigarettes (for smokers), but they are not absolutely safe. The best strategy is to stay away from all nicotine products.
1. Comparison of relative harm
Traditional cigarettes: Burning tobacco produces thousands of chemicals, of which at least 70 are clear carcinogens (such as tar, carbon monoxide, arsenic), which can cause serious health problems such as lung cancer and cardiovascular disease.
E-cigarettes: Aerosols are produced by heating tobacco oil (usually containing nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerin and flavors), which do not contain tar and carbon monoxide, but may contain harmful substances such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde (especially when heated at high temperatures).

2. Potential risks and controversial points
Both contain nicotine, are highly addictive, and may affect the brain development of adolescents. However, e-cigarettes have only been on the market for a short time (about 20 years), and data on long-term health effects is still insufficient.

3. Risks for special groups
Non-smokers: If non-smokers use e-cigarettes, they may become nicotine dependent and turn to smoking (especially teenagers).
Ex-smokers: The UK Public Health Department (PHE) believes that e-cigarettes can be used as a tool to quit smoking, but the US FDA is cautious about this and emphasizes the need for professional guidance.

4. Views of authoritative organizations
World Health Organization (WHO): It is recommended to regulate e-cigarettes, prohibit sales to minors, and be vigilant about their public health risks.
